Buckwheat, also known as common buckwheat, has been cultivated as a highly prized, versatile and nutritious food source for thousands of years. First cultivated in south east Asia some 8,000 years ago, it was amongst the first crops introduced to North America by European settlers. Unrelated to wheat despite its name, buckwheat is actually related to rhubarb and sorrel, all of which are members of the knotweed family.
About buckwheat
Buckwheat is one of a number of fascinating pseudo-cereals or pseudo-grains as they’re often known. Alongside amaranth, millet and quinoa, buckwheat is an ancient grain, a grain that has essentially remained unaltered by man over thousands of years.
They all come from broad-leaf plants and are similar to grains in terms of nutritional composition. The good news though is that they are all actually completely grain and gluten-free. That makes them an absolute boon for any dog with a grain or gluten intolerance.
Nutrients in buckwheat
A novel source of occasional protein for dogs, as already mentioned, buckwheat is grain and gluten-free. It’s also rich in complex carbohydrates, protein and dietary fibre. That makes buckwheat an excellent alternative source of protein for any dog fed a wholly plant-based diet.
It’s also a rich source of vitamin B2 (riboflavin), vitamin B3 (niacin), vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) and vitamin B6. And it’s rich in magnesium, manganese and phosphorus, as well as being a good source of vitamins B1 (thiamine) and B9 (folate) together with iron, potassium and zinc. So it’s not without its benefits, despite being diminutive in size.
Benefits of buckwheat for dogs
Buckwheat contains a flavonoid called rutin, which is known to help improve digestion. It also contains quercetin which give it anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties.
In addition, it can also help lower blood pressure and help control blood sugar levels because of its richness in something called D-chiro-inositol. So it’s an ideal protein source for both diabetic dogs and dogs unfortunately enough to suffer from hypertension.
To summarise the benefits of buckwheat for dogs then:
- It possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and prebiotic properties
- Has anti-diabetic properties beneficial for dogs suffering from diabetes
- Helps improve digestion
- Has anti-cancer properties
- Helps lower blood pressure
Its beneficial plant compounds include rutin, quercetin, vitexin, and D-chiro-inositol
